This book is the translation of the author's memoirs first published in 1978 in Germany under the title Türkischer Basar.
The Turkish edition has been expanded by a lengthy biography of George Mayer written by Rıfat N. Bali and with annotations in the main text. Mayer was the last descendant of his family managing the Mayer department store in the Grande Rue de Pera, nowadays called Istiklal Caddesi.
